TWO NINTH PLATE DAGUERREOTYPES OF BOY ID'd WM. CARY SANGER, ASST. SECY OF WAR, 1901-1903.
These two 1/9 plate oval daguerreotypes are in full red velvet oval cases. They are of William Cary Sanger. The first was taken c. 1855, when he was 2 years old, and the second c. 1858, when he was 5.
William Cary Sanger was born May 21, 1853, in Brooklyn, New York, and died there on December 6, 1921. He was a Harvard graduate and had a career in the military and politics, becoming U.S. Secretary of War, 1901-1903. The earlier dag image has blue tinting to the boy's dress and a magic background. The second has very high contrast. Both are sharp and have no wipe marks. One has old seals and the other is resealed.
